Waiting, waiting, waiting. We’re all waiting for something, aren’t we? It never fails to amaze me that the Bible has something new to say about waiting as we journey through this series, learning from Hannah, Rachel, Mary, Elizabeth, and more, and I firmly believe He wants us to wait well and equips us to do it throughout the scriptures.

But He doesn’t leave us to wait on our own. We are in a constant state of waiting, looking for the day that Jesus returns, but God has gifted us with something —Someone— who makes the wait worth it and the wait walkable.

In Acts, the disciples who have walked with Jesus sat down to a meal with Him, and He said,

“Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”  Acts 1:4-5

Wait for the gift? Oh, I’m good at waiting for gifts… or maybe I’m bad at it… but if you’re like me, you know the feeling. Christmas is coming, or a birthday, we’ve made our list, given it to Mom, Dad, and Grandma, and the days on the calendar get “X”ed off one by one. If you’re like me, you size up the gifts under the tree or sneak a peak at the car every time someone comes back from the store, trying to make sure you get what you’ve asked for.

But the gift the Lord was talking about would be unlike anything else. The gift of the Holy Spirit would be one that would change the face of the earth, impact generations to come, and in fact is the gift of God Himself.

The Trinity is three in one: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. In Acts 1, we see all three. Jesus says that God will send the Holy Spirit. Three in one. Right. There.

We are still in the act of waiting. Some of us may be waiting on a promotion, on financial provision, on marriage, on a child, on restoration in our families. Waiting is familiar. And waiting is hard.

But if we receive with open hands and hearts the gift that God has given us in the Spirit, if we linger in His Presence and ask for His direction during our days, we will be restored with the faith, joy, and gladness needed to wait and wait well.
