Come with me for a quiet time with the Lord.
We live within sight of the beach. The sound of seagulls often breaks the quiet. The smell of low tide drifts on the wind. You can taste the salt in the air. But I live in a house filled with people, and have a job that requires me to be on the computer a lot. And I have to drive my kids around most afternoons. I try to spend as much time actually on the beach as possible. The constant sound of waves, pebbles underfoot and immersing myself, even for a few minutes, is like a reset for my soul. Wandering on the lonely rocky beach on an overcast day is where I talk to the Lord. It is where my soul finds quiet. And I am able to listen, and actually hear what God says, and see who He is, and remember His character. The constant input of daily life fills me to the brim, and I find myself easily overwhelmed by even the smallest bit of chaos. But in silence, it’s like I can dump out the bucket to start anew. It’s like I can wash away the petty frustrations and see all the hurt feelings and inadequacies of being human wash out to sea. This emptying – getting rid of all of the extra input – allows me to receive. I can listen and actually store the peace and wonder in a little slot in my heart that has been freed by the salty wind and waves.
