I read Job 5 recently; which is basically the Lord recounting why He is Lord. I came across the word “wonder” in verse 9, and that has been on my mind. Remember the wonder of Christmas as a kid? It somehow becomes less, well, wonderful as we get older. Yet, I think that the Lord wants us to pursue wonder. I think that He is glorified when we stand in awe. First snowfall, blazing sunsets, cold water on a hot day, miraculous healings, joy amidst pain… Wonder is not just the stuff of childhood, it is perhaps some of the most important stuff of life. Seeking wonder is bound up with the possibility of encountering God. There is so much in this life that chokes out our joy, that blinds us to wonder. But what if we practice wonder? Lift your gaze, be surprised and delighted, allow yourself to look for God and His incredible character. Take a minute to dwell on past times of wonder in your life. Small and large, the explained and the unexplainable. I bet most of them have one thing in common. Wonder seems to always come from interruption. It rarely happens due to our planning. Yet it comes to us as a gift. God puts someone, or something in our day, and we are surprised, delighted, and sometimes, transformed. Wonder always gives to us. It is the giving and welcoming of a gift – a gift freely given with nothing expected in return. At the very least, wonder costs our attention. Wonder gently, and sometimes loudly insist: NOTICE. LOOK. PAY ATTENTION. There is something to behold here, something that will shape you, that will draw the good out of you, make someone good of you perhaps. Wonder is at the heart of a good life in Christ.
