Experiencing God: Collect

$8.50

Description

Ever since I was a little girl, I have been a collector; not necessarily amassing actual collections like coins or books. But rather, I pick up little items that I find everywhere I go. Many of these rocks or shells or sea glass bits live in the bottom of jacket pockets, waiting to be found and remembered at a later time. Some of them I display in a dish on a windowsill, some in a frame, others in a pile. They become little altars, a tangible reminder.
Collecting bits from the world around me has been a way to connect and remember. A colorful leaf pressed between the pages of a book reminds me how God is faithful and constant, just like the cycle of seasons. A tiny sand dollar brings to mind a prayer spoken just before picking it up. A stack of smooth stones tells of the long hike to a forgotten beach, where the Lord’s presence was heavy like the mist all around. A flower in a vase smiles its joie de vivre, spreading comfort and joy.
In Scripture, there are many instances of altar building as a way to remember and share the stories of experiencing God. In Joshua 4, God parts the Red Sea for the Israelites. He instructs them to pick up dry stones on the way through, tangible proof of God’s miracle, and build an altar with them on the other side.
Experiencing God doesn’t always look like parted seas. It could look like a small pebble or leaf picked up on a walk with a friend that reminds you of His faithfulness. The word “experience” means “to have practical contact with and observation of facts or events.” Holding something in your hand that connects to an experience makes it much richer and memorable.

In September, we collect.
