The book of Ruth is one of my absolute favorites. My husband and I even incorporated Ruth’s words into our vows, “Where you go, I’ll go. Where you stay, I’ll stay. Your people shall be my people, and your God will be my God.”
When Benjamin Franklin was United States Ambassador to France, he occasionally attended the Infidels Club which was a group that spent most of its time searching for and reading literary masterpieces. On one occasion Franklin read the book of Ruth to the men in the club. but changed the names in it so it would not be recognized as a book of the Bible. When he finished, the men were unanimous in their praise. They said it was one of the most beautiful short stories that they had ever heard, and demanded that he tell them where he had run across such a remarkable literary masterpiece. It was his great delight to tell them that it was from the Bible.
Pretty awesome right?
One of the main reasons I love this book, is the fact that Ruth is such a shining example of Jesus and His love for us. Ruth demonstrates Christ’s loyalty, loving kindness, and commitment, among other traits.
Janel…such a great color combination. I adore Ruth’s story. She was so courageous and committed. To love Naomi as she did…who was so full of woe…when Ruth had her own grief to carry to a strange land…honestly, she sets the bar high. Then Boaz…what a love story. What a package deal he chose with eyes wide open. Powerful! Thanks for your thoughts…and the history lesson. I enjoyed every word.
Hey there!
We chose thisone for the lectures of our wedding too. We love it, cause it remind us of who we are and what we believe. My husband and me belong to different churches, but we know, we still can be one family, although peaple make it a lot difficult for us. Most important thing for us is, we believe in the same god and we stick together, whatever they will tell us. We’ll live our life together, wherever god sends us.
Thanks for your post. I’m wondering if you can share the source of the Ben Franklin story? I’m trying to discern if it is a true story that can be found in a primary source, or if it is just a modern story made for the Internet. After all, George Washington warned not to trust everything on the web, right? ;) I would be interested to know the source of the Franklin story. Thanks!
