We have so much to be thankful for, amen?! What I love about Gratitude Documented is that it encourages us to find things to be thankful for in our daily lives that we may have overlooked or have begun to take for granted.
If you’ve been around the Illustrated Faith blog in recent months, you’ll have caught my series Words of Worship, where I’ve been journaling through some of my favorite worship songs, and I was so excited to get to share Day 10 with you: MUSIC!
I think music is a powerful thing, and I have it playing at almost all times. I put on Frank Sinatra when my students come into my classroom in the mornings, both to wake them up and to expose them to one of the greats. I listen to instrumental music when I’m reading or traveling, and it makes me feel like I’m living in a movie. I’ve also come to learn that music can help me express and discover feelings that are not always easy.
When grieving with a friend the loss of her mother she shared a particular song with me that helped break through the walls she’d been building to push away the pain, and now every time I hear it I’m reminded to pray for her and to be willing to process the pain in my own life. Certain songs jog me back to the end of a relationship that simply wasn’t meant to be, but that God certainly used to teach me about His love and faithfulness.
Music is powerful, and music is a gift. The Psalms are full of poems that can be sung to the Lord, and many have been. I am particularly fond of Shane & Shane’s live Psalm recordings where they sing the scriptures one after the other in beautiful and powerful ways.
For Gratitude Documented, we’ve landed in Psalm 104, verse 33.
I will sing to the Lord all my life,
I will sing praise to my God while I live.
I pray that becomes the cry of our hearts. May we sing to Him, making a joyful noise to him, all our lives in all our circumstances with all our hearts. I’m oh so thankful that the gift of music can help us do that.
