Sometimes I grab a can of Cherry Coke, bundle up in my favorite Ball State sweatshirt & settle down to my craft desk without the slightest idea of what I’m going to do in my Bible. All I know is that I’m itching to get into the Word, & that’s enough for me. I’m sure everyone has a day like this. Well, I’m here today to share my secret method for choosing the perfect scripture to illustrate. I have a very technical & methodical system & I hope you have the skill to use it as well:

I call it the “Flip-the-Pages-And-Point-to-One-At-Random Methodology.” The way you execute it is you securely grab the bible by one of the covers & run your thumb along flipping the pages as you go. Then stop somewhere & point to a page at random. If you can tackle my system, you’re an expert! ;)

The page I flipped to this day was a page in 2 Chronicles. (Page 324 in my bible to be exact!) I read the page searching for the words that would strike my fancy & I’m pretty sure a confetti canon went off in my heart when I read 2 Chronicles 5:13. The passage reads “The trumpeters and musicians joined in unison to give praise and thanks to the Lord. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals, and other instruments, the singers raised their voices in praise to the Lord and sang: ‘He is good, His love endures forever.’ Then the temple of the Lord was filled with the cloud.” (NIV) I could hear it! Whoa. Talk about a way to ring in the New Year? THAT’S a real celebration!!

I wanted to capture the chaotic but elated PRAISE that this scripture evokes in me. That confetti canon in my heart needed to burst on to the page! To create some easy but adorable polka dot confetti, I used a super simple tool that you can grab right from your junk drawer: a basic wooden pencil! All I did was use the eraser as a stamp. Now, this is not a new idea because… obviously. But it’s the first time I’ve ever done it & the little crafter in my mind told me I was a genius.

I think it really shows the excitement & makes the page look like a teeny tiny celebration, which is SO fitting! A few days ago, most of us on the planet were gathered together with champagne in our hands counting down the seconds to the New Year. It’s Year 2016. That’s CRAZY to think about! The Earth has survived yet another year in the universe! I can’t even wrap my mind around the idea of 2016 years. And even MORE years before that! But God’s love… endures FOREVER. That’s something that is just too big to comprehend. We talk about “forever” as an abstract idea: a really really really long time. But it literally means for ever. For all of existence & then some. For all of time. Forever.

2016 years is just a tiny plip! in a vast ocean of existence. It’s a really really really long time. Now THAT’S really something to celebrate.
