Illustrated Faith: Tell us a little about yourself!
Beth: Hey there, I’m Beth! I’m a wife, a mom of 3, a bit of a dreamer, & a Jesus girl. I like to dapple in all things creative & my fave is combining mediums. Though I dapple in a little of everything, these days I find myself dealing mostly in paint & paper. Our family has recently given up city life to be farm newbies. My favorite days include paint, people, s’mores, & donkeys.
IF: How did you get started in your art?
Beth: In 2011 we began our first adoption process. We needed to fundraise to meet all of our payments, so I began selling paintings. Of course, during this time I could only think of my future daughter. I only knew she was a girl & would be from Ethiopia, but I had no name or face to put to that dream, so I left the faces empty. Of course, the Lord had different plans & our third child was a boy!
IF: How has your faith played a role in your creative journey?
Beth: Being a mom is a full-time gig, & I find myself drained spiritually if I don’t carve out time to spend in the Word, & honestly, it’s hard to find that time. When I paint & use scriptures, prayers, & hymns I am able to still create, but at the same time I’m immersed in opportunities to connect with God through my pieces.
IF: Show us a few of your very favorite things you’ve designed.
Beth: The Old Rugged Cross is probably my favorite piece. Normally my style is very simple, but I had fun layering & layering & just creating from my heart on this one.
I’ve recently started mounting hymns on wood & I absolutely love how they are coming out. Somehow that added pop of color in the back brings them to life, so I’m really loving those right now.
IF: Share something surprising about yourself that people might not know!
Beth: My husband & I are opening a retreat facility for others to have camps & workshops. We’ve done it here & there but we’re about to be doing it full time. It’s in tents & teepees & barns & such a fun thing for our family to do together. I love getting to be creative in that way & meet so many cool people right in our yard (great for the homebody in me).
IF: What are your most favorite scripture passages?
Beth:
The Lord will surely comfort Zion & will look with compassion on all her ruins; he will make her deserts like Eden, her wastelands like the garden of the Lord. Joy & gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving & the sound of singing. -Isaiah 50:3
IF: What is one product to illustrate your faith that you can’t live without?
Beth: Can I make it two?! Faber Castell Gelatos & Pitt pens!
As I look through her photos & art, I just feel so calm & inspired; don’t you!? I was so moved hearing about how her adoption inspired her artwork! You can find Beth’s work here at Free Spirit Farmhouse! Thank you for sharing, Beth!
