I had a conversation today with some friends about how dark this time of year is and how that affects us. I don’t know what the weather is like for you wherever you are reading this right now. If you are currently on a beach or somewhere gorgeous and warm…I don’t know if I want to talk to you right now. Where I live, it is currently 22 degrees, windy, cold and dark! The light is completely GONE before 4:30 pm! There’s something about that that just makes things a little more dreary and discouraging. It’s a little hard to snap out of. Even though we know the darkness isn’t going to last forever and spring and summer will eventually return…in this moment, in the cold and dark winter, it’s easy to feel disheartened and worn out.
That was how the world felt many, many years ago before God sent His precious Son. The Light. The people of the world had been walking in darkness for a really long time. Waiting for a savior. Searching for salvation. Longing for a king.
And then…light. Light was born. I love the lyrics to “Oh Light” by Gungor from Day 19 of our kit, Come and Carol. Check it out:
Oh light
Come to reconcile
Come in like a child
Holy nightOh light
Our hopes and all our fears
Met within your sight
Holy nightHallelujah
God is with us
Hallelujah
A light has comeOh light
God and man entwine
Of earth and of divine
Holy nightOh light
Mending fractured earth
The soul now felt its worth
Holy nightHallelujah
Holy God is with us
Love is always born withinHallelujah
Light will chase and find us
Love is facing us againHallelujah
God is with us
Hallelujah
A light has come
I love how this kit is really open and free to interpret however we want. I love reading through the lyrics of the songs and seeing what Scripture lines up or is referenced. Immediately, my mind jumped to Isaiah 9, where they are prophesying this amazing Light that is to come. As I started journaling I knew I needed to base this entry in Taylor’s new set “Light of Life.” Her lettering and imagery matched these lyrics perfectly!
