We want our community to get to know our artists a little better so we are going to feature them one by one here on the blog! Leah Schumacher, the cutest most spunky artist I’ve ever met, is here on the blog today answering our interview questions! I can just hear her voice when I read her responses. HA!
Illustrated Faith: Tell us a little about yourself!
Leah: Hey, y’all! I’m Leah from Salted Brew and I am a graphic designer, movie fan, and puppy momma. Since graduation, God has been teaching me all sorts of biggie life lessons that I share on my blog. Three years ago, I made some large life leaps to make my relationship at the time work. He deployed, true colors were revealed, and it became very clear that it was not the right situation for me. I moved back home heart broken, confused, and angry with God. I felt like a got a crash course in “real life” in all sorts of ways and I just felt beat up. Slowly, I felt God putting me back together piece by piece. His love and grace became real to me through my story and healing process.
IF: How did you get started in your art?
Leah: I’ve always been on the artsy fartsy side and really started exploring design in high school. After graduation, I have been identifying and establishing my style.
I always enjoyed paper crafting and still like designing pieces that people can hold, flip through, and handle as opposed to web items. When I first saw the idea of bible journaling, I knew it was right up my alley.
IF: How has your faith played a role in your creative journey?
Leah: Honestly, I compartmentalized my faith and my design up until a few years ago. It wasn’t until I saw a post from Shanna and her bible journaling that I went, “ohhhh, of course!” When I started, it elevated everything I was learning. Journaling helped my faith become personal and beyond skin deep. It’s opened my eyes to what Jesus dying on the cross means for ME and what grace means and looks like in MY life.
Leah: The pages I picked are more significant to me because of what I learned at that time. For example, I remember Jesus distinctly and powerfully meeting me while journaling this page in Hebrews and dots just started connecting. Things that were head knowledge suddenly felt real and applicable.
Leah: I was born in Spain. No, I don’t know any Spanish beyond what I learned in high school. And yes, I have a dual citizenship. And since I was born on a naval base, yes I can indeed still be President someday, haha! I may or may not get the same comments when I share this fun fact. :)
IF: What are your most favorite scripture passages?
Leah:
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” -Romans 8:28
“As for me, I would seek God, and to God I would commit my cause, who does great things and unsearchable, marvelous things without number.” -Job 5:8-9
Leah: I can’t pick just one! Aside from my journaling bible and watercolor set, I love the Illustrated Faith phrase stickers, stamps, and printables. I love me some die cuts to keep on hand. :)
