Debby Schuh | His Love Covers The Mess

You might call me a “professional student”… I am a life-long student and God is my teacher. The prayer that I pray more than any other is that God would teach me and guide me and instruct me in His way. I’m just like you – I face an uncountable amount of decisions in a day – some small, like what I’ll eat or think about something or someone, and others are pretty big choices and can be life-altering if I don’t make the right decision. I need the Lord to guide me every minute of the day. I don’t want to do a minute of this life without Him!

This week, as I was doing my daily reading in Psalms, the verses in Psalm 25 leaped out at me where David is asking God to teach him His ways and instruct him in the way He should go. I wanted to illustrate these verses in the margin, so I started by coloring in the margin with a Gelato crayon. There was a big problem with that though! It was really cool as a “rubbing” but NOT the effect I was going for!

I took a very lightly damp cloth and rubbed it over the color, hoping it would make it smooth and pretty, but instead it wrinkled that page and wasn’t pretty at all. I had made a pretty good mess!

I decided that the best solution was to cover most of it up, so I found this vintage spelling tablet and used it as the base for my entry. I especially like the part at the top for the class – I’m calling it “LIFE”, the date, and my name.

I pulled together supplies from my stash – using a variety of stamps and stickers to put the prayer of my heart on the paper and then into the margin of my Bible.

I truly believe that life with God as my teacher and guide is an awesome adventure. I didn’t notice it when I was first reading this passage, but when I added the blue arrow, it pointed right to the words “the friendship of the Lord.” I love that! Every time I say, “Yes, Lord” to His friendship, to His guidance, I take another step forward in this adventure with Him.

When I finished my page and thought about what I was going to write to share with you all, it occurred to me that this process was a lot like life – I can make what seems like a mess, making a choice that seems like the right thing at the time, but God can take it and transform it into something beautiful – His love covers it all. I say a loud “YES!” to that!
