step by step tutorial using Illustrated Faith Print Pray Trace traceables for creating embroidered embellishments for your Journaling Bible by Elaine Davis

This week I thought I would do some exploring with different ways to use the Print Pray Trace products from the Print & Pray Shop! As soon as I set out to brainstorm some creative products, my embroidery thread practically hopped in my lap! If you’ve never tried embroidery or have been too intimidated to give it a go, now’s your chance! Embroidery is SO easy and SO relaxing. Plus the faith-filled images from our talented artists make darling little projects ready to be stitched up into embellishments & little gifts. :) You don’t need much to get started, either, which is just wonderful. Let’s give it a go, shall we?

All you need to create an adorable little embroidery is:

  • Illustrated Faith Print.Pray.Trace. set
  • a few colors of embroidery floss
  • small embroidery hoop
  • canvas fabric
  • scissors
  • a light source to trace on
  • a pencil
  • a needle

Step #1:

Place your tracing sheet between your light source & your canvas fabric & use your pencil to trace the design on to your fabric. You can use a light box, a window, or gently trace it on your iPad screen.

Step #2:

Once you have your design traced on to your fabric, secure it tightly & taught into your embroidery hoop. Thread your needle with the color you’d like to start with, tie a knot in the end and poke into your design through the back of your project. Start stitching over your design!

Don’t stress over your technique. I don’t use any fancy stitches as I create my designs, I just kind of make it up as I go. Ssssssh! Don’t tell anyone. hahaha You can find out more about different types of easy stitches on the DMC website. I use a variation of the Back Stitch, which is shown on the page! You can do whatever kind of stitch you want– it’s your project!

Step #3:

When you’re ready to end your design or switch colors, just tie a knot in your thread right up close to the fabric on the back of your project & snip the tail. I went back & stitched on a little fashion sequin on this little fawn’s head to give her a little bow. :)

Step #4:

When I finished stitching my design, I cut around it leaving plenty of room so I didn’t accidentally snip any of my threads on the back. Then I used glue dots to stick it securely down to my bible page. :) Ahhhhhh! I die over the cuteness! You don’t have to put it in your bible though. You could frame it, create a little canvas hang tag for a gift, make a teeny tiny pillow or a wall-hanging. I’ve done a lot of different things with little embroidery projects & there’s nothing better than giving them as gifts! The people I have gifted them to have all loved them!

I stitched up this little fawn from the He Loves You Beary Much tracing set by Jess Robyn before I really knew how I wanted to use it. Then I came across Habakkuk 3:19 which reads: “The Sovereign Lord is my strength; He makes my feet like the feet of a deer, He enables me to tread on the heights,” (NIV). And I wanted to jump up & down for finding such a perfect scripture for this point in my life. I think my journaling on my bible page says it all:

“Amen! Through Him, I am able to reach new goals, accomplish SO much more than I thought possible. He lifts me higher. He takes me farther. I can do hard things through Him alone!”

I encourage you to go illustrate this page in your own bible. It gave me such a PROFOUND reminder of what I’m capable of. Sometimes my confidence is waning, & this made me feel like I could go scale a wall! I’ve been trying new things all over the place this week & my reward was illustrating this verse as confirmation of what I can do through Him!

<3 Elaine
