Over and over again the Psalms hit me with just what I need to hear, right when I need to hear it. And if anyone knew about the ups and downs, ins and outs of waiting, it was David. In the Psalms we read of his triumphs and struggles, his cries to God as he asks to be seen, heard, and rescued, and in the next refrain he often praises God for who He is and what He’s done.
Wouldn’t our waiting look wildly different if we approached God with such freedom in feeling?
Psalms 20-29 are some of my favorites, and I turn to them in both the highs and the lows. Psalm 25 specifically has encouraged my heart so much in recent weeks. Psalm 25:1-5 in the Amplified Version says:
To You, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
Oh my God, in You I [have unwavering] trust [and I rely on You with steadfast confidence],
Do not let me be ashamed or my hope in You be disappointed;
Do not let my enemies triumph over me.
Indeed none of those who [expectantly] wait for You will be ashamed;
Those who turn away from what is right and deal treacherously without cause will be ashamed (humiliated,embarassed).Let me know Your ways, O Lord;
Teach me Your paths.
Guide me in Your truth and teach me,
For you are the God of my salvation;
For You [and only You] I wait [expectantly] all the day long.
I want to wait with expectancy. I want to believe that the Lord will answer my prayers and come to my rescue. I want to walk out full of faith knowing that He is with me always. How do I do that? By praying.
Writing out our cries to God, of praise and of longing, is powerful. He hears our plea and will answer. If you haven’t tried it before, I highly encourage praying through the Psalms. He will meet you right where you are and comfort you in the wait.
