Anyone else love the fair? Every year our state fair rolls into town and thousands of people flock to the gates. Little children stand wide eyed in awe of all the sights and sounds, and adults make lists of the fifteen new fried foods they want to try on their way to the ferris wheel. I personally loved the car shows and art fairs, taking my time to wander and see the work of the hands of so many talented people from around the state.

However, when thousands gather, waiting is a necessary task. The adrenaline and excitement can quickly turn to restlessness and frustration when waiting in line for the ferris wheel or merry go round if we’re not careful. Temper tantrums are thrown, cotton candy is dropped, and tears are shed, dampening the spirit of the outing right away.

If only we could realize that the wait is half the fun!

It wasn’t until college when I started adventuring to theme parks and fairs with friends that I realized the downtime in between the big events or rides were some of my favorites. We’d laugh, we’d people watch, and we’d reminisce, making memories in those in between moments that warmed my heart just as much if not more than the thirty second thrill on the ride of our choice.

Waiting in life, for whatever it may be, can in much the same way. We can get caught up in the time spent “wasted,” fidgeting and eyeing those ahead of us in envy as they get to take a spin on that thing or receive that prize before we do. OR we can embrace the wait, choose see the extraordinary in the mundane, and enjoy the ride from the first moment we step in line.

In James 5 it says:

“Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.”

His timing is perfect, and He does not waste the in between. Let’s adventure there with Him!
