mixed media glitter background tutorial | Illustrated Faith by Bella Blvd CHRISTmas Collection, Praise Book, acrylic paint

It’s been awhile since I’ve worked in my worship music art journal and a couple weeks ago we sang Chris Tomlin’s version of Joy to the World (Unspeakable Joy). Every year I just love the added lyrics to the song and I’ve been wanting to do an art worship page for it. I had envisioned a brilliant starry night and thought it would be fun to grab some glitter and make a glittery night background for some scrapbook layering with the nativity as the focus. I found a nice black background paper in the Praise book that I thought was just perfect for the start. I went through the CHRISTmas collection and found the perfect pieces for layering over the background. I then grabbed some black paint, as well as some blue and white paints. Before I start with the tutorial I wanted to share the lyrics too, just because I love them so much.

Joy to the world, the Lord is come
Let earth receive her king
Let every heart prepare Him room
And Heaven and nature sing
And Heaven and nature sing
And Heaven, and Heaven and nature sing

Joy to the world, the Savior reigns
That all their songs employ
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy

Joy, unspeakable joy
An overflowing well
No tongue can tell
Joy, unspeakable joy
Rises in my soul, never let’s me go

He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of His love
And wonders of His love
And wonders, wonders of His love

1) scrape paint on background… first round I did black, second round I did “primary cyan”, third round I did “turquoise blue” and fourth round I did “titanium white”

2) while the paint is still wet sprinkle on glitter and scrape again to get the glitter into the paint

3) repeat steps 1 and 2 several times layering on the paint and glitter… I used different color paints but the same yellow and gray glitters each time.

4) Once you are happy and it’s all dry, you can start adding on your paper layers and stickers.

first, I cut out one of the journaling cards to use as a background

then I layered a tip-in over that

next I put two tabbies together to make one tab at the top and then clipped the top off of the gift tag to use as an element

I wanted the element to stand out a little from the white background so I taped it on top of a clear cuts sheet and cut a border around it.

Next I added the title using a “joy” from the paper pieces and some white homespun alphabet stickers. I wasn’t sure if I had all the letters and I wanted to make sure I spelled it correctly before adhering them to the page. I like to spell it out on my hand first to double check it.

To finish off I added markings to the alphabet stickers and outlined the ones that weren’t on the background to make them stand out a little more.

Here’s a close up so you can see the sparkle… it’s hard to photograph but I love the glittery background and the way it turned out. I can’t wait to do another Christmas song on the other side of my Praise Book. I’m thinking Noel or O Holy Night.
